Just Back from…

If you’ve been struggling to comprehend the London riots, imagine a place where you don’t need to lock the door and can wander down to the beach or the town in shorts, T shirts and sandals to buy the most delicious fresh fish. A remote place in the Caribbean you might think – or a private island where you are the only inhabitant?
No – although it’s an island it is part of America – Nantucket, known in the past for its whaling industry is a wonderfully relaxing place to spend a holiday. Unlike the mainland of US this month it has had balmy weather with warm sunny days cooled by a pleasant breeze.

No chain stores are present on the island, so all the commerce is local business, the harbour has amazing yachts, but also feels like a real working harbour, with fishing boats as well as those willing to take you whale watching. Humpback whales, fin whales, dolphins and a variety of shearwaters can be seen on a day out with a genial and informative local skipper. leaving from the Town Pier.

Beaches are sandy, clean and not very busy for much of the day.

Ice cream on the nose is a special event for the youngsters and the bakery is legendary.
Now that it’s already September and the new school term beckons, it all seems a long time ago – but we are only just back!
Ah well – maybe next year….
